Defender
A piece that attacks a square occupied by one of its own pieces, so that it could recapture there.
A piece is defended when at least one of its own side’s pieces attacks its square. The defender is that piece. A defence does not always hold, because the defender may itself be pinned, overloaded or too valuable to recapture with.
