Line
A rank, a file or a diagonal, considered as the path along which a long-range piece moves or attacks.
Rooks move along ranks and files, bishops along diagonals and the queen along both. A line is open when nothing stands between the attacker and its target. Pins, skewers and discovered attacks are built on lines.
