Attack
A piece attacks a square when it could capture on that square if an opponent’s piece stood there.
An attack is a geometric fact about the position, distinct from a threat and from an outcome. A piece may attack a square that it can never usefully move to, and a pinned piece still attacks the squares it bears on. The attacker is the piece that carries the attack.
