Loss
The material a side ends up behind after the sequence under study, against the opponent’s best defence.
A loss is the gain seen from the other side. A piece is lost when, whatever the reply, it is captured for nothing or can only be traded for less than it is worth. A move that gives up material on purpose, in view of what follows, is not a loss, and the reference gives it a separate name.
