Tactic
A short forcing operation that gains material or mates, resolved within a few moves against best defence.
The catalogue’s domains group tactics by the mechanism they use: a line, a fork, a removed defender, a king that cannot escape. A tactic is read on the sequence and not on the position alone. A position that only looks tactical, where no forcing sequence gains anything, belongs to no record.
