Undefended
Said of a piece whose square is attacked by none of its own side’s pieces.
An undefended piece has no defender. That alone does not make it lost, because it must also be attacked and the capture must be safe. The reference keeps “undefended” for this geometric fact and uses the catalogue’s own terms for the outcomes built on it.
